It is practically impossible to create a folder named CON in windows. You would not know about it even if you are advanced technician. The only way to know is if you are told or read about it somewhere. I know, I did not believe either when I first was told about it.

It was after I tried many times to create a folder name CON that I finally believed that one cannot name a folder CON. Well, you can, but you have to do some advance tricks. One such trick is to create the folder in another platform and copy it to Windows.

I am sure you want to know why you cannot name a folder CON or any names you want on Windows. If you are familiar with any programming language, you know that they have some words that reserved. The same goes for Windows. Windows have some words that special meanings to the Operating system.

The reason that you cannot use these words is because these words are reserved. They tell the command interpreter the type of device in the system. CON is one of these words. Other words like PRN, AUX, NUL, COM1, COM2, COM3, COM4, COM5, COM6, COM7, COM8, COM9, LPT1, LPT2, LPT3, LPT4, LPT5, LPT6, LPT7, LPT8, and LPT9.and many others are also reserved words. You would get the same prompt if you tried to create a folder with the name of the ones listed above.

CON Key board and display.
PRN system list device, usually a parallel port.
AUX Auxiliary Device , usually a serial port.
CLOCK$ system real-time clock.
NUL Bit-bucket device.
A: – Z: drive letters.
COM1 First serial communication port.
LPT1 First parallel printer port.
LPT2 Second Parallel printer port.
LPT3 Third Parallel printer port.
COM2 Second serial communication port.
COM3 Third serial communication port.
COM4 Fourth serial communication port.

Now the trick part to name Windows folders CON

If you really want to know how do it, follow these steps. Please use a test system to perform the steps.

open command prompt
type in the following text

MD \\.\D: \CON

This will create a folder named CON in drive D. You are warned. DO NOT try this on your main system. At the very least, try it on a non-system drive if you really really want to try it.

To delete this folder simply replace MD by RD in the above command.
